How To Get Onto Google In Two Simple Steps

Google

Many small business owners ask me regularly how to get onto Google with their business website. You can follow these 2 simple steps so you’ll be found on Google.

If you’re serious about your online marketing then you will want your website to be found in the major search engines, and right now in Australia, only 1 really matters and that’s Google. Follow these simple steps to get onto Google’s radar and start ranking.

Step 1 – Register With Google Analytics

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is the bread and butter analysis software that most business owners should use to monitor the visitors to their website. It is full of amazing information about your visitors and if you haven’t been using it yet, then you’re in for a real treat. Go ahead and create a Google account if you haven’t already got one (shame on you!) If you’ve got a Google account, that’s great. The next step is fairly simple and straightforward with the only technical aspect being verifying that your website actually belongs to you.

Once you’ve got your account you’ll want to Add Your Website. This is where you’ll be asked to;

  1. Create your website account name (generally use your business name)
  2. Add your websites URL (which is the web address – for us it’s www.digitaldomination.com.au)
  3. Change your time zone
  4. Choose if you want to share your data. I’d recommend you share both ‘With other Google products only’ and ‘Anonymously with Google and others’. Why? Sharing with other Google products allows for easy linking between your Google products, which is important for the next step and Anonymous sharing with Google allows your data to be collated and used for the greater good of everyone, including yourself. Plus it’s anonymous, so no one will know specifics about your business.
  5. Choose your country, read the User Agreement (or not, if you’re like me and 99% of the population) and click Yes to their terms and conditions.
  6. Hit the Create Account button.
You’re almost done!
Finally, you’ll be asked to verify ownership of your website by placing a small piece of code on the domain or on the website itself. This part is a bit technical, especially if you haven’t had anything to do with your website so far. If you’re unsure about FTP or adding a snippet of code on your site you should call your web host, or contact us and we’ll help you do this part.

Step 2 – Register Your Website With Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools

Click the image above and it will take you to Googles Webmaster Tools page. Since you have already shared your Google Analytics account with other Google products your verification here is simple.

For most users, linking with the Google Analytics Account is the simplest and fastest way to add the webmaster tools. If you followed our recommendations in step 1, then you’ll have your own Analytics account and can easily add the webmaster tools.

And that is how to get onto Google in two simple steps.

What will happen now is Google knows you’ve got a website and knows where it is. Over the coming days Google will send out ‘spiders’ that crawl your website pages and find out more information on what it is your business does. Then, Google will look at how important your website is to people using the search engine. Based on their algorithm you’ll be positioned in the search results.

Troubleshooting or (Steve, I followed your steps and I’m still not showing on Google)

Ok if you’ve done the above two steps and waited a couple of weeks and you’re definitely not on Google then you need to try the following;
  • Go to Google and type in site:yoursite.com.au – where yoursite is the name of your website. EG: site:digitaldomination.com.au
If your site is indexed, it will now show up in the search results. If not, something isn’t right. Lets take a look at another possible issue;
  • Go to your website home page and right click somewhere (generally to the left or right of the page) and when your browser menu appears select ‘View Page Source’
A new page should appear written in HTML. At this point I’d like you to press CTRL+F at the same time. That should open a small search box. Type in ‘noindex’ and press enter. If you found a result then there’s a good chance your website is telling Google not to include it in their index! If this happens, give us a call and we’ll sort it out for you.

OK, so my website is now indexed, but it’s no where near page 1!!!!

If you’re wanting to climb up the rankings in Google then what you’re looking for is called Search Engine Optimisation. We can help you with that, as it’s one of our core activities at Digital Domination. You can give us a call and we’ll discuss your options.
